In Saudi Arabia with a tropical desert climate, daytime temperatures soar to 40℃–50℃ during the summer months of June to August. For local construction companies, meeting mandatory local pouring specifications under extreme summer heat — including a maximum concrete pouring temperature of 35℃ and an internal-external temperature difference of ≤20℃ for mass concrete — is a high-cost, high-risk challenge for concrete temperature control in Saudi Arabia.
Our client, a Saudi-based construction firm, has long been plagued by the country’s extreme high-temperature weather. Limited construction windows in summer severely slow down project progress, while excessively high concrete pouring temperatures bring high risks of rework and financial penalties.
The client initially adopted cold water mixing for concrete, which reduced concrete temperature by roughly 6℃. However, at the peak of summer, the concrete still failed to meet the ≤20℃ pouring requirement. They later switched to purchasing high-priced commercial ice for cooling. Yet as summer temperatures climb and local ice demand surges, supply shortages frequently occur, leaving the client unable to source ice when needed, along with issues of overstocking or understocking ice supplies.
ICEMEDAL has customized an integrated 10-ton per day tube ice concrete cooling solution with built-in water purification functions for the client. This plug-and-play, low-investment solution enables temperature compliance without complex infrastructure construction or on-site renovation.
The tube ice machine for concrete cooling produces 10 tons of tube ice 24 hours a day, which can stably support a concrete pouring volume of 80–120 m³ per day, fully matching the client’s construction schedule. All parts of the tube ice machine in contact with ice are made of 304 stainless steel, which effectively prevents equipment corrosion and extends the service life of the ice maker in Saudi Arabia’s high-temperature, high-humidity coastal areas. The produced cylindrical hollow tube ice has a slow melting rate. The system is equipped with an ice storage hopper for temporary ice storage, eliminating the need to build a dedicated cold storage room for ice, and the ice can be directly transported with simple trolleys.
Local municipal water and groundwater in Saudi Arabia have high salinity and contain trace amounts of grease, sediment and impurities. Direct use of groundwater for ice making will easily cause evaporator scaling and water circuit blockage, leading to reduced ice production capacity and shortened service life of the ice machine over time. For this reason, a water purification pretreatment system is configured. Groundwater treated through multi-stage filtration including desalination, oil removal and sediment removal is used for ice making, which effectively prevents evaporator scaling and blockage and guarantees stable ice production efficiency.
The tube ice concrete cooling scheme does not require the construction of a complete set of insulated cold storage and ice transportation devices. Compared with conventional flake ice raking systems, the upfront investment can be greatly reduced.
It also has low requirements for on-site environment renovation: no additional cold storage or special conveying equipment is needed, and only a reserved space for placing the ice machine, ice storage hopper and water purifier is required on site. Meanwhile, the equipment has a compact overall footprint and can be transferred to the next construction site for reuse at any time after the project is completed. It is highly suitable for small and medium-sized concrete pouring projects, truly realizing low investment and instant operation.
ICEMEDAL engineers arrived at the Saudi project site, completed the water and power connection and installation of the ice machine, as well as the commissioning of the ice making system, and the system was put into normal operation in only 10 days. Compared with traditional flake ice raking systems, the installation cycle is cut by half.
At the same time, the system adopts a PLC control system with simple operation. After brief hands-on operation and daily maintenance training provided by our engineers for the client’s on-site personnel, ordinary construction workers can complete daily start-up, shutdown and ice discharge operations.
